It appears that Nikola Jovic and the Miami Heat may have avoided a worst-case scenario that could have derailed his third NBA season.

Jovic, who injured his ankle when he took a misstep on a defensive closeout drill at Kaseya Center in June, appeared in Serbia’s pre-Olympic exhibition win over Japan on Sunday. He recorded four points, one rebound and one assist in 14 minutes.

This is notable because European media outlets had previously reported that Jovic was questionable to participate for Serbia in the Olympics. With Jovic overseas and away from the team facility, the Heat could only hope that the injury wouldn’t impact the start of the season.

Sunday’s appearance lifts those concerns, as Jovic is on track to play for Serbia in the Paris Games this summer, potentially setting the stage for a big third season.

The 27th pick in the 2022 draft, Jovic played well in his second season, emerging as Miami’s starting power forward by the time the Heat made the playoffs.

At 6-foot-10, Jovic’s combination of size, shooting and ball-handling stand out on the Heat’s roster. He averaged 7.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2 assists in 19.5 minutes. If healthy, Jovic will compete for a starting spot next season.
