The Miami Heat have made the leap from fringe playoff team to contender after acquiring future Hall of Famer Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks, but the East has responded to that bombastic move.
The Philadelphia 76ers, not to be outdone, were able to convince LeBron James to spurn Miami and sign a two-year contract, adding him to a team that already has Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Jaylen Brown in the mix. That's tough enough, but Philly isn't the only contender that seeks to put some road spikes in Miami's way.

5. Indiana Pacers
The Pacers will be back to full strength in 2026, which means the combination of Tyrese Haliburton and Pascal Siakam might be able to push them to yet another deep playoff run. Even though they traded what became the No. 5 pick for Ivica Zubac, Indiana's offensive firepower will be tough for Miami to contain.
4. Detroit Pistons
The Pistons still need to get the Jalen Duren situation resolved and could stand to add one more scorer other than Cade Cunningham, but it's hard to poke too many holes in a team that was the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference last season. Cunningham alone should put them in the top five.
3. Toronto Raptors
Once the Kawhi Leonard trade gets finalized, the Raptors could roll out a hellish defensive lineup featuring him, the rising Scottie Barnes, and promising Top 10 pick Collin Murray-Boyles. With RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley supplementing Leonard's scoring, Toronto has upgraded on a team that was a No. 5 seed last year.
2. New York Knicks
The Knicks are the reigning champs for a reason. Even after losing Mitchell Robinson and rolling into the year with a lackluster bench, the three-headed monster of Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and OG Anunoby should be enough to help this team coast to at least a top-four seed in the East.

Consider the fact that VJ Edgecombe is a former No. 3 pick who averaged 16.0 points per game as a rookie, and he is clearly the worst member of the starting five. James' passing, Embiid's scoring, and the 1-2 punch of Brown and Maxey on the perimeter will push a stout Heat defense as far as it can go.
