If Joe Cronin and the Portland Trail Blazers haven't haunted the Miami Heat enough, they may be about to swoop in and steal Giannis Antetokounmpo from their reach in what would be a nightmarish scenario. According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, the Blazers might be a dark horse threat for Giannis in trade talks.

“I've heard Portland has serious interest to get a deal done to acquire Giannis. To potentially bring back the pairing of Dame and Giannis…I'm told Portland has serious interest & they are investigating behind the scenes and trying to see what would make sense.”

The big question, of course, is whether Giannis would have a legitimate interest in signing long-term with the Blazers. There's no certainty on that end just yet.

However, make no mistake, this is not good news for the Heat either way.

Winning the Giannis sweepstakes was never going to be easy

Even though the Heat knew that "winning" a Giannis sweepstakes was never going to be easy, I'm not sure anyone was prepared for a team like the Blazers to enter the picture. It should be noted that the Blazers aren't just a dangerous threat because of Giannis' relationship with Damian Lillard.

But perhaps what may be most appealing for the Bucks to entertain a move with Portland is the fact that they own the right to their picks in 2028 and 2030, because of that original Lillard trade from a few years ago.

Despite the young players that the Blazers could include in a deal, getting the rights back to their picks in 2028 and 2030 is naturally going to be viewed as intriguing.

Whether Giannis would be willing to play along, and whether such a package would beat out what Miami could offer, remains to be seen, but this is almost the last thing that Heat fans wanted to hear heading into what many are hoping to be the final stretch of this saga.

Heat fans can't fathom losing out to Joe Cronin...again

Heat fans aren't sure that their front office will be able to close on Giannis, but there's no question that they'd rather lose out to any other team except the Blazers. Especially considering what happened between the two franchises a few years ago with Lillard, this is the type of scenario that would only add insult to injury.

But, at this point, there's not much they can do. They just have to trust the process and hope that Giannis' lure to Miami will outweigh the intrigue possibilities that Portland can offer - both to Giannis and their front office.

With still a month until the 2026 NBA Draft, I can't imagine the Blazers are going to be the last we hear of a potential "mystery team" in the Giannis sweepstakes, but this is as bad as it gets for Heat fans. There's no question about that.
