The talent gulf between the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat was undeniable on Monday night. But it wasn't just the 25-point loss that Heat fans should be upset about, nor the fact that Miami is now on a five-game losing streak and in serious danger of falling into the Play-In Tournament for a fourth-straight season.

It's that the Spurs slapped the Heat with a harsh reality check that the front office refuses to admit. Despite what the front office may continue to echo, the Heat aren't good. They're not even close to being good.

They're not just one star away. Against the Spurs, it felt as if they were two or three away from real contention.

The Heat were exposed against the Spurs

That should trigger a warning sign of what this Heat team isn't. Perhaps most unfortunately, it should signal what they really are. At best, the Heat are mediocre.

It wasn't just Victor Wembanyama who had his way with the Heat. It was also the likes of Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and Keldon Johnson who jumped off the screen for San Antonio. And that's not even counting De'Aaron Fox, who had an off night for the team.

The Heat couldn't match that talent, and the disparity was too much to make up even with a fully healthy roster.

If it wasn't clear before, it certainly was on full display against the Spurs. The Heat aren't close. And it's time they stop acting - and operating - like they are.

The Spurs, in many ways, should be what the Heat is striving for.

The Spurs are everything the Heat desires to be

They have the strong fundamentals, the strong leadership, the great coaching, but they're missing the most important ingredient - the talent.

And without talent, it's difficult to consistently compete against the top teams in the league. No matter how good a coach Erik Spoelstra is, no matter how good their developmental system is, the Heat will always fall short without the talent.

That's what we saw with the Heat against the Spurs.

It should be a wake-up call for Miami. It should be a warning shot to the front office. It should prompt real change this offseason.

Unfortunately, there's just no guarantee that it will. In fact, odds are that it won't.

Short of the Heat landing a disgruntled star player this offseason, it's difficult to envision big changes coming for the Heat. But even if they don't land Giannis Antetokounmpo or another star target, this Heat roster should look very different next year than it does now.

But it's almost as if the Heat are addicted to mediocrity if excellence can't be attained. And, as the Spurs have proven, there are many better ways. Maybe it's time for the Heat to take a page out of their playbook.

Fans have certainly been calling for it. You can't help but wonder if the front office may slowly be realizing that. On Monday night, they had an up-close look at those potential possibilities with the Spurs.
