Selecting Kasparas Jakucionis with the No. 20 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft wasn't necessarily a move made with the intention to replace Tyler Herro, but it's hard not to question his future with the Miami Heat after what transpired Wednesday night.

Eligible for a huge contract extension this summer, the Heat's immediate and long-term future will hinge on the big decision on Herro. And the presence of Jakucionis in the backcourt makes it that much more intriguing.

Again, the addition of a blue-chip prospect like Jakucionis isn't likely to push Herro out the door, but it will certainly give the Heat some options. Jakucionis and Herro are two very different players with contrasting skill sets, but the addition of the former could make the latter slightly more expendable today than he was just a few days ago.

Tyler Herro's extension decision could be franchise-altering

In his defense, Herro has improved each season of his career. He's made his way to All-Star status and has done everything the Heat have asked of him. While he remains a polarizing prospect, he's been an unexpected success story for Miami.

At the same time, he hasn't made the superstar leap that the Heat have desired him to make. Because of that, it should bring some natural hesitance to pay Herro the money he's likely going to be asking for when it's time to talk about an extension.

On October 1, Herro will be eligible to sign a three-year, $150 million extension with the Heat. Even in today's rising salary cap, that's a huge contract for a player who is not a superstar. There are even questions about whether he can be a strong No. 2 on a contending team. While he's been a good player for Miami, there's no world where the Heat can afford to give him that extension while also having the intention of building a championship contender.

In theory, Jakucionis should make life easier for Herro. It probably will, especially if he can continue to grow as a playmaker on the offensive end of the floor. However, there's an argument to be made that he also gives the Heat some wiggle room when it comes to Herro's future. It's not a certainty, but it's an idea.

Maybe it does; maybe it doesn't. We're just asking questions here. And if the Heat are indeed leaning into a youth movement, it could make sense to explore Herro's trade market. I'm not calling for it, but it's an intriguing idea.

There are probably a few moves and decisions that will take place before we have some added clarity on Herro's situation and future with the Heat. But, especially after what transpired on draft night, there's no question that whatever decision is made on the Herro front that it will play a huge role in the future of this franchise.
