On a recent episode of "The OGs" podcast, Tyler Herro shared how he grew up a big Miami Heat fan, what he wants to bring to Miami and how he nearly ended up with a Heat rival on draft night.
Tyler Herro wants to bring a championship to Miami
Udonis Haslem asked Herro what his ideal career would look like.
"I want to bring a championship to Miami." Herro said, "I really do want to bring a championship to Miami. I can't imagine a parade down Biscayne."
Going down Biscayne Blvd. is an iconic part of Miami's championship parade. It's been 12 years since a parade has taken place.
The Boston Celtics almost drafted Tyler Herro
During the 2019 draft, the Miami Heat had the 13th pick, and the Boston Celtics had the 14th pick. Herro shared that if Miami didn't draft Herro, then Boston told him they were going to draft him with the next pick.
Herro is already a polarizing player; if he had the Boston media mafia behind him, he would have been an all-star by now. Herro in a Boston jersey makes me sick. Also, Herro admitted that he was nervous on draft night. If you watch Herro on the court, he never looks nervous.
Herro talks about his maturity
Throughout Tyler Herro's six-year career, he has frequently been the subject of trade rumors since his rookie season. There has been much debate about whether he should come off the bench, despite leading his team in scoring, as Miami often struggles to win games. Herro missed the last Finals run, which raised questions about whether the team performed better without him due to his injury.
In discussing last year's playoffs, where he struggled to be Miami's top option, Herro said, "I've been through a lot in my six years already. My career isn’t going the way I personally want it to."
He acknowledged the pressure of performing in the playoffs against the Celtics, stating, "I feel like last year in the playoffs, I wasn't fully ready for the task at hand."
Herro's comments reflect a strong mindset and an understanding that he has the potential to improve.
If you have an opinion about Herro, whether positive or negative, it’s worth giving this a listen. Herro comes across as very humble and has a great personality. During the episode, he and the guys discussed the role players of Miami's big three and reminisced about the impressive shooters the team had in the past. The famous alley-oop he threw to Haslem even went viral online. Additionally, Herro shared his reasons for de-committing from his hometown in Wisconsin to play at Kentucky. He also mentioned that he had to take swimming lessons because his house has a pool. People tend to either love or dislike Herro; however, after listening to this episode, you might find that your perspective on him changes.
