Thursday kicked off with some exciting news for Heat Nation: Miami Heat star Chris Bosh himself finally came forward with an update on his health, and it was good news.
After almost a month of letting both fans and media speculate about what was really keeping the forward out of the game, Bosh released a statement…

Obviously, it was great to hear that whatever he was and is still currently going through, is not life threatening. And even more so, that he remains positive about his return this season. But there is still so much left unsaid.
For starters, while Bosh stated he is not currently suffering from deep vein thrombosis, this does not mean the diagnosis did not once come up. It also does not mean that he did not have blood clots period. So while Bosh’s statement definitely worked in reassuring the public, it did not exactly offer too much insight into what he has been struggling with.
The other thing that should be noted is that unfortunately, people who develop blood clots once, are usually at a risk for recurrence. Which is why the majority of such patients are put on blood thinners for the rest of their lives. And partaking in strenuous physical activity, such as playing basketball, is highly dangerous while on them. In fact, traveling could also potentially pose a problem.
Bosh is certainly not the first athlete to deal with blood clots. Heat teammate Udonis Haslem actually had a scare in 2010. NASCAR driver Brian Vickers was also sidelined because of the same problem. The only difference is that while a lot of people develop them from surgery, Bosh did not. Which may actually make him more prone to a reoccurrence.

There is no doubt that Bosh is putting his health and himself first. With a wife, three kids, and two more on the way, the veteran has way too much to lose by coming back when he is not ready. The organization and its’ affiliated doctors would also never do anything to endanger the safety of one of their players. But even so, it is still scary to think about Bosh’s return, at least without still knowing the whole story.
If Bosh does indeed come back this season, there is also the question of when. With Miami currently doing pretty darn well without him, waiting until the playoffs may be the ideal situation. Especially given that by then, the Heat could easily overtake the Boston Celtics for the third seed in the East.
Regardless of his absence on the court, it is clear that Bosh is still very much involved in day-to-day team operations. And being the leader that he is, one can only assume he is still playing an integral role in Miami’s success.
