The Miami Heat have signed Louisiana Tech rookie forward Erik McCree, who went undrafted in this June’s NBA Draft.

The Miami Heat have signed forward Erik McCree, bringing their training camp roster to 19 players. Teams can carry up to 20 players during training camp, but must get down to 15 for the regular season.

McCree will be a training camp body and is not likely to make the regular season roster, but could sign the team’s developmental league affiliate the Sioux Falls Skyforce. With his combination of size and shooting, he could emerge as an interesting prospect.

In three seasons at Louisiana Tech, the 6-foot-8 McCree averaged 14.9 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting 46.4 percent from the field, 34.8 percent from 3-point range and 73.5 percent from the foul line.

Again, McCree won’t make the team, but Miami has shown an interest in big men with perimeter shooting skills this summer. They drafted Bam Adebayo (who showed off some shooting ability during summer league) and signed proven 3-point shooter Kelly Olynyk and versatile forward Jordan Mickey.

Louisiana Tech has an impressive history of forwards, including All-Star Paul Millsap and Hall-of-Famer Karl Malone.

In just three seasons, McCree became just the sixth player in school history to record at least 1,400 points and 700 rebounds. During his senior season, he led the team in points (585), rebounds (295), field goals made (202), free throws made (127) and minutes (1,047) as he earned All-Conference USA First Team honors.

The Orlando native McCree registered 13 double-doubles, the second-most in the conference and the fifth-most by a Bulldog during a single-season.

He finished last season as one of only four forwards in the country to connect on at least 200 field goals, 50 three-point field goals and 125 free throws.
