The Miami Heat are over the salary cap this free agency season. That doesn’t mean they cannot add some diamonds in the rough. Who should they add in free agency?

The Miami Heat have found themselves in a tough situation since the 2017 free agency. Ever since they gave Dion Waiters, James Johnson, and Kelly Olynyk a more than a generous contract, they have been stuck being over the cap.

What even is their situation?

Currently, the Heat have 13 signed players, which adds up to $140 million dollars and that leaves the team with $-31 million heading into free agency. That is still not counting the latest addition in the NBA Draft. Even with the possibility of stretching Ryan Anderson’s contract, that will not affect the cap significantly.

The Miami Heat are known for signing players that had fallen off or weren’t as productive in their earlier teams. Take a look at the two players I mentioned above. Both those players were journeymen and were signed to a minimum and now they take most of the team’s cap.

Looking back at the past, they signed Joe Johnson and our current most paid player, Hassan Whiteside to a minimum and they worked out quite well.

The 2019 free agency is all about the big market players. Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and Kawhi Leonard are all available, but unfortunately, they are all out of Miami’s reach. However, because of the top-heavy class, many quality type players could go under the radar.

And those players right there should be the ones that the Miami Heat invest in.

Starting off the list is a point guard who once was in the MVP conversation.
