The Miami Heat are sure to be players in the free agency market this offseason. With a decent amount of cap flexibility, they should be looking to improve their roster ahead of next year.
The trade market is certainly one way to go about this. However, signing free agents or pulling off sign-and-trade deals will likely be the path Miami chooses to go down this summer.
According to Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer, league insiders expect the Miami Heat to pursue a couple of free agents in particular – Spencer Dinwiddie and Kelly Oubre Jr.
Finding a new point guard has been discussed as one of the top priorities for the Miami Heat this offseason. With Goran Dragic getting up there in age and Kendrick Nunn entering restricted free agency, they desperately need to add some depth to the guard position.
Dinwiddie is coming off a season that saw him miss all but three games. He went down early in the year with a partially torn ACL but is expected to be back in time for the start of this upcoming season.
It has been reported that Dinwiddie will decline his player option, thus becoming an unrestricted free agent. He could potentially be the point guard the Miami Heat are searching for.
In the 2019-20 season, he averaged 20.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 6.8 assists. Dinwiddie shot 41.5% from the field and 30.8% from deep.
His poor three-point shooting could be a concern considering Miami’s lack of shooting. However, his playmaking and scoring ability are very enticing.
As for Kelly Oubre Jr, he would immediately improve Miami’s wing depth. Outside of Jimmy Butler and Duncan Robinson, they don’t have many quality wings on the roster.
He had a great year in Phoenix two years ago but struggled shooting the ball last season with Golden State. Despite this, he still put up solid numbers.
Oubre averaged 15.4 points, six rebounds, and 1.3 assists last year with the Warriors. He shot 43.9% from the field and 31.6% from three-point range.
At 6-7, Oubre is rather tall for a wing. The Heat could potentially insert him into the starting lineup alongside Robinson, Jimmy Butler, and Bam Adebayo, but he would likely be better suited as the team’s sixth man.
His scoring and aggressiveness would fit in well with the Heat. The only concern regarding Oubre is how much he’ll end up asking for this offseason.
The wing is reportedly asking for a long-term deal worth around $20 million per year. That would be a steep price to pay for the Miami Heat.
Rumors are just that – rumors. That being said, keep an eye out for these names, because the Miami Heat could be making a push for one of them this summer.
