The Miami Heat are off and running through the NBA Summer League circuit. They have had quite a few standouts too.
Omer Yurtseven has shined so much during the summer circuit, that shortly after the brief California Classic section, he was signed to a standard deal. A guy from last year’s roster, kind of, in Max Strus, has also had a few big moments as well.
Other than those vets, of sorts to be technical, there has been a few new guys to shine. While the others will come up soon, the name at the top of the list if Marcus Garrett.
A big guard out of Kansas, he was a Defensive Player Of The Year for his college conference and the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year for 2020. Basically, he’s a terror on the perimeter, defensively and a Miami Heat type of guy, if there ever was one.
He has shown a ton throughout summer league and so much so, that it’s worth a question. Is he worthy of a regular roster spot?
The Miami Heat are known to find guys out of nowhere and Marcus Garrett might be the next. Does he deserve a regular roster spot though?
While Garrett has shown enough to be worthy of the final regular roster spot, a spot that would go to reserve anyways that might not have as much potential left as Garrett, it’s bigger than just him. If he doesn’t fill a regular roster spot, then he must be signed using a two-way slot.
With other worthy developmental prospects, such as DeJon Jarreau, Javonte Smart, and Micah Potter, to name a few, two of those guys could be kept using those two slots. That, though, is only if they have two two-way slots available.
They could do so by signing Garrett to the regular roster. Again, unless they want to maintain flexibility for a possible mid-season trade, it would behoove them to sign Garrett to the regular roster.
That would allow them to harvest as much developmental talent as possible, which their current summer league team has a ton of. That, could be the lifeblood to the next crop of Miami Heat greats.
