The Miami Heat have one final roster spot left to fill. While they don’t technically need to add anyone, it may be smart to bring in a veteran to help shore up depth.

Miami doesn’t have great wing depth at the moment, but they also have some shaky depth at point guard. Their plan is to give Gabe Vincent a chance, but if he doesn’t pan out, there are no other options.

If Vincent, for some reason, ends up playing poorly, shouldn’t the Heat have a backup plan for the backup one? Well, there might be one just waiting in the wings.

The Miami Heat should target Rajon Rondo if he becomes a free agent

The Memphis Grizzlies just completed a trade to send Eric Bledsoe to the Clippers. In return, they got a few players, none of which they planned on keeping.

One of those players should be of particular interest to the Miami Heat. Rajon Rondo could be the perfect backup point guard for the Heat this season.

Memphis has supposedly made it clear that they don’t plan on keeping Rondo for this season, according to The Daily Memphian. The likely plan is to look for a trade, but if that doesn’t work out, Rondo could hit the buyout market sooner rather than later.

If he were to become an unrestricted free agent, signing him to a minimum deal should be a no-brainer for Miami. He could step in as the backup point guard and immediately contribute.

Not only that, but he would also be a great presence in the locker room. His basketball IQ and ability to mentor younger players would be a great help to Miami’s roster.

Rondo’s style of play also perfectly fits with what the Heat are trying to build. He fits into the “leave it all on the court” culture that Miami has built up over the years.

Should he become available, the Miami Heat should jump at the opportunity to sign Rajon Rondo. The fit just makes too much sense for it not to happen.
