Miami Heat: Pat Riley’s ‘whale’ has to only be ‘Plan A’… right?
The Miami Heat are knee-deep in search of a move that can help them tilt the axis of power in the NBA. With their core, coaching, and ability to develop undervalued or underserved talent, one more high-impact player could be all it takes to properly secure them another berth to the NBA Finals.
Heck, they were just one win away from that this past season and this was without two of their most key pieces at even half-strength, as both Kyle Lowry and Tyler Herro were banged up. However, it seems that in order to secure that other piece, they’ll have to give up something of extreme value, something that may be too preposterous to part ways with.
In the case of Kevin Durant, the hangup seems to be that the Brooklyn Nets will only consider a package that includes Miami Heat star big man, Bam Adebayo.
The Miami Heat are trying to land a big player on the market, but nothing has happened yet. If they aren’t able to do that, they, likely, have backup plans.
While that may have been a consideration early on and after much thought, you just can’t move Bam if you are the Miami Heat.
When it comes to the Utah Jazz, well they want a little over a half dozen first-round picks for the services of Donovan Mitchell. Even for Pat Riley, a guy that’s willing to send a first-round pick or two out of the door to acquire talent, that’s outrageous.
But that leads here though. What is next?
Nobody knows besides the folks in that building, exactly, but you know they have a contingency plan. Safe bets would say that they move down to trying to land a mid-tier player on an expiring contract or in a disgruntled situation if they strike out on a bigger deal, most notably with an eye towards filling the hole left by P.J. Tucker presumably.
Guys like Harrison Barnes, Cam Reddish, Dario Saric, or Kyle Kuzma could all be in the mix there. Those are just a few of the many possibilities that should or may be considered.
One thing is for certain though, even if the Miami Heat strike out on a whale, that’s only the first plan. Their history shows that they know how to make things happen out of nowhere.
