Miami Heat media day will open training camp for the 2026-27 NBA season on Monday, September 28. After the big summer, which was punctuated by the acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Heat will finally start their new preparations to begin a new era of basketball in Miami.
While most of the interest surrounding the Heat will correspond to the actual start of basketball activities when training camp opens on Tuesday, there are certainly some intriguing storylines to follow when players and coaches meet with the media one day before.
Heading into the Heat's official media day, we explore four big questions that fans want answered before basketballs even begin touching the ground for practice.
Will there be any big changes to the offensive philosophy after the move for Giannis?
This is one of the bigger questions that many Heat fans are quietly wondering about. After completely changing the way they operate on the offensive end of the floor a year ago, is Miami going to be subject to more changes on that end of the floor?
More specifically, the advanced stats do suggest that three of the most important Heat players on the roster were also three of the best pick-and-roll players last season with the ball in their hands. However, the Heat were the least infrequent PnR team in the league last season.
Will the Heat make the change most are expecting?
Will there be any early limitations for Giannis Antetokounmpo at the staring of training camp?
Giannis is coming off the most injury-riddled season of his career, in which he only appeared in 36 games for the Milwaukee Bucks last year. How will the Heat manage him, if at all, to start training camp? How much will he play in the pre-season?
Those are big questions that all Heat fans want to know, and the hope is that they will get those answers as soon as training camp opens.
Who is the starting two-guard heading into the start of camp?
One of the bigger training camp battles will revolve around the starting shooting guard position. Who will get the nod? Will the Heat go with Klay Thompson, Pelle Larsson, or Tim Hardaway Jr.? Theoretically speaking, most assume Klay will get the role initially, but will that still be the case after camp?
It will certainly be one of the most interesting on-the-court storylines to follow.
From a coaching perspective, is there an expectation the roster will remain at 14?
Aside from the on-the-court curiosity, many fans would also want to know whether there's an expectation that the team is going to enter the season with just 14 standard players on the roster as opposed to 15.
Is there help on the way? Will the Heat's coaching staff be asked to make it work until the right buyout candidate emerges during the season? It's tough to predict, but it will be interesting to hear what the expectation is from the coaching staff.
