Bruce Brown could be overlooked backcourt piece the Heat desperately lacks

The NBA regular season is underway, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that there aren’t good players still around that the Miami Heat could add, especially with one standard roster spot available.

While there's a belief that the Heat could be holding that spot for the buyout market, there's one role player with championship pedigree who could be a viable option right now. It's been a few years since he played such a role (with the Denver Nuggets back in 2023), but Bruce Brown could be an overlooked answer to the Heat's concerns in the backcourt.

Bruce Brown could get a look from the Heat

Last season, Brown was actually very good from a statistical point of view. He averaged eight points, four rebounds, two assists, and one steal per game while playing in all 82 games. He was one of just a few players to achieve this feat.

Brown also shot 38.5 percent from 3-point range, which was a career high for him.

But what has plagued Brown is consistency, especially from the 3-point range. Despite a career year a season ago, Brown shot 33 percent and 32 percent from the 3-point range, respectively, in each of the two seasons prior.

All that said, what Brown could truly add to the Heat goes beyond his offensive skill set.

What Brown would bring to the Heat is yet another defensive stopper, but with more playoff experience. I would see him taking the spot of a guy like Myron Gardner, where he could be in the rotation on certain nights but is not necessarily a regular for the Heat.

Signing Bruce Brown right now could be a risk for the Heat

On the other hand, does the Heat really want anyone taking away minutes from a younger guy like Myron Gardner? Especially since he's shown genuine promise in his opportunities earlier on in his career. Wouldn't Brown be redundant?

Honestly, he could be, which is why I don't think he's someone who should be instantly signed to the Heat's last roster spot. However, he genuinely has value as a playoff-tested veteran with championship experience, which the Heat clearly valued this offseason.

If no other team swoops in, I would love to see Bruce Brown on a 10-day contract. While his performance last year is absolutely worthy of a standard contract, his inconsistency year-to-year is the reason he currently doesn't have a roster spot in the NBA. But if he shows promise early on, I think converting him to a standard deal would be nothing but helpful to the Heat barring that the other potential issues on the roster are possible to fix via the trade market.

The Heat bringing in Bruce Brown is nowhere near a guarantee, but if push comes to shove and Miami feels they need to make a move now, he is probably near the top of their list of targets who would make sense.
