Davion Mitchell is doing what it takes to make sure he's able to build some chemistry with Miami Heat newcomer Giannis Antetokounmpo before the start of training camp. Even if that means crossing an ocean to do so.
According to Miami Herald reporter Anthony Chiang, Mitchell is planning on linking up in Greece to work out with Giannis this summer. It's unclear when that exactly will happen, but, according to Mitchell, the two have set the table for it to happen.
“I actually asked him, ‘Yo, what are you doing in the summer? I’m honestly trying to work with you and build some chemistry,’” Mitchell recalled.
“He was like, ‘Do you ever go to Europe?’ And I was like, ‘Actually, I’m coming to Europe.’ ... ‘Alright then, you can pull up to Greece if you want.’ Immediately, I said, ‘I’m there.’ So, I’ll pull up there, and we’re going to work out. It’s going to be fun.”
Davion Mitchell looks like a man on a mission
Seemingly, since the Heat's season came to an end, Mitchell has been a man on a mission. Based on what he's been sharing through social media, it looks like Mitchell has not left the gym all summer long. He says he's lost weight and has clearly committed himself to improving his game.
He's looking to add to that by connecting with Giannis in an attempt to build some chemistry before the Heat come together for the official start of training camp.
As a player who will play a huge role, more than likely as the starting point guard this fall, in Giannis' first year in Miami, this is exactly what you want to hear and see from the lead guard. It also doesn't hurt that this is a contract year for Mitchell. He could test unrestricted free agency after this season in Miami.
But if you ask Mitchell, his devotion in the gym over the first two months of the summer has everything to do with this upcoming season. And now that Giannis is on board, there's only that much more at stake.
Davion Mitchell will have to take another leap this season
There's reason to believe that if the Heat are going to be successful this season, they're going to need Mitchell to take another step forward in his development. And playing next to Bam Adebayo and Giannis, that may not be that outlandish of a possibility.
While playing for the Heat over the last season and a half, Mitchell has found a way to put together the most efficient stretch of his career. Add Giannis into that mix, and you'd have to imagine that it could get even easier for him on the offensive end of the floor.
That's what Miami is going to need if they're going to emerge as a legit championship contender in the Eastern Conference this season. It appears Mitchell is up for the task, no matter what the cost.
