The Miami Heat and Milwaukee Bucks agreed to a blockbuster trade centered around Giannis Antetokounmpo two weeks ago, but now that the new league year has begun, it's finally official.
Giannis is a Heat.
There was some hope (especially from the Heat's side) that this was a deal that could be expanded to offer more financial flexibility for Miami to add more pieces around their new dynamic duo. However, in the end, this blockbuster deal was just between the Heat and Bucks.
Here are the final details of the deal that sent Giannis to the Heat:
The Heat now gets more clarity on the roster around Giannis
More than anything, the Heat are now able to get much more clarity on what the roster will look like around Giannis. One of the first moves now that the Giannis trade has been finalized is the signing of Tim Hardaway Jr.
At the start of free agency, the agreement with Hardaway Jr. was one of the first moves that the Heat believed they needed to make. Even though he's not the sexy move that many Heat fans will be satisfied with, Hardaway Jr. does give Miami the shooting it needs on the perimeter.
Miami is certainly not done yet, but now that the Giannis trade is finalized, it does give them a clearer picture of what could be next.
But that's a topic for the days to come. For now, the Heat should be celebrating the return to relevance in the NBA. Giannis is not just the big fish that they've been hunting for the better part of the last decade, but he's a player that will immediately put the Heat back in the title picture.
The Heat landed their whale
The Heat's front office managed to pull it off again, and that should be celebrated.
Sure, there are questions about what the rest of this roster around Giannis will look like, but, as has been the mantra in Miami for decades now, they got the star, and they can figure out the rest later.
The Heat got their whale. Giannis is a Miami Heat. There will be questions later, but for now, the Heat can rejoice that Giannis is officially a Heat.
