Heat check all the boxes for LeBron James and Rich Paul isn't hiding it

Whether many are willing to admit it or not, the honest truth is that the Miami Heat check a lot of boxes for a potential next fit for LeBron James. Perhaps unintentionally, Rich Paul may have just revealed it, too.

On a recent episode of his podcast, Paul admitted a few things he's looking for (and perhaps prioritizing) when it comes to LeBron's next team. A team's defensive ratings, on-ball help defense from individuals, offensive schemes, and coaches/teams' success rate on ATOs (after time-out play calls) were all mentioned.

“I think as you’re evaluating things it goes all the way down to what has been the history of someone in this position valuing a possession”

The Heat check a lot of boxes for LeBron James

Objectively, especially considering the teams that are viewed as viable options, the Heat are a team that might check all of those boxes.

The Heat were one of the best defensive teams in the league, even before the Giannis Antetokounmpo addition, last season. They have great on-ball defenders on their roster with Davion Mitchell, Andrew Wiggins, Giannis, and Bam Adebayo. Miami also has one of the best coaches in the league with Erik Spoelstra.

Whether Spo has the personnel or not, he seems to always find a way on the offensive end of the floor. With the addition of Giannis, his life is only going to get that much easier. Even more so if they are able to add LeBron, too.

In this context, Paul may have been hinting at the Heat without flat-out naming them.

Are there other teams that could make the argument that they fit the bill, too? Sure, I suppose. But there may not be one that lines up with what Paul was speaking to more than the Heat.

What will LeBron ultimately prioritize above all?

But despite the on-court fit for the Heat, there's no guarantee that will be the one thing that LeBron ends up prioritizing above all.

In the end, LeBron could just say, "I want to go home" or that he wants "to close his career where it all began." And, unfortunately for Miami, that's not with the Heat. That's Cleveland.

And no matter the clean fit, there's nothing that the Heat can do to compete with that lure from the Cavs.

For now, who knows what LeBron and his team are thinking. He's been impossible to predict throughout the course of his career.

All that said, there is one thing that we know, and it's that the Heat might very well be the best basketball fit for him at this point in his career. And Paul did little to hide that in his most recent podcast appearance.
