Giannis has already changed the Heat more than Heat culture is changing him

The impact that Giannis Antetokounmpo has already had on the Miami Heat can't be overstated.

Over the last few days, Giannis' comments about Heat culture have certainly made the rounds. However, while the Heat's culture may already have had a positive impact on Giannis, it doesn't compare to what the superstar forward has already meant to the Heat franchise.

Even though they would never admit it, the Heat's franchise was in a very bad place before Giannis. They were the definition of mediocrity in the NBA, having made the NBA Play-In Tournament four years in a row.

Giannis has resurrected the Heat franchise

They were "bad," but not bad enough to factor into the lottery much. When they were "good," they weren't good enough to hold any level of significance in the Eastern Conference. The Heat were stuck in purgatory over the last few years (yes, even the last couple of years with Jimmy Butler still on the roster).

But with Giannis, all of that has changed. And in an instant. It's not just that Giannis has completely shifted everything for the Heat. The truly amazing part of it all is how quickly it's happened.

You can see it in the pictures shared on social media. You saw it on media day. You hear it from every reporter, insider, and even some national reporters now. The Heat matters again. And that's not something that would've been the case this quickly had it not been for Giannis.

On a recent podcast, NBA analyst Tim Legler laid it out perfectly. Legler says that Giannis has been (and will be) the East's "most consequential newcomer." He adds that the Heat went from a "non-factor" the last couple of years to "firmly in the mix." For Legler, it's the fact that he's now scheduled to call Heat games, from opening week to Christmas Day.

That just wasn't the case the last couple of years.

Heat culture finally has the superstar its needed

Something has shifted in Miami. Something that couldn't be done with just culture. Heat culture is real, and it's proven. But even the best cultures need superstars. And that's the real recipe for greatness in the Association. It always has been.

Since LeBron James left, the Heat just haven't had that superstar to thrive in the culture and create something special. But that's what Giannis has the opportunity to do in Miami.

And, in many ways, it's not just Giannis who is benefiting from the change with the Heat. In fact, I'd make the argument that it's the Heat who are benefiting more from the immersion of Giannis.

Giannis is the superstar player that the Heat have been desperately pursuing since LeBron's departure. Roughly 12 years later, they finally got it. And there's no question that they're the real winners of this arrangement so far.
