There's not much Miami Heat fans can find joy in through the first few hours of NBA Free Agency, but at least they can get a good laugh about who the Orlando Magic signed in an attempt to add depth to the point guard position. Orlando inked Tyus Jones to a one-year contract, but it's anything but a home run move by the franchise.
Jones is coming off an inconsistent season with the Phoenix Suns, in which he left much to be desired as a point guard. He started in more than half of the regular season games for the Suns last year, but was unable to be the consistent supporting player that the team needed.
Individually, his stats were terrible, but the Suns were one of the most disappointing teams in the Western Conference. Considering Jones was expected to help get the team on track as a contender, he should hold at least a little blame for the team's lack of consistency.
Admittedly, Jones' life may be a bit easier in Orlando, but there are still questions about whether he'll be able to emerge as one of the missing pieces as a supporting player.
The Heat have fallen behind in the East
After a good chuckle, the Heat needs to gear into action. Even though the Magic are still considered to be little brother to Miami, the Heat are quickly falling behind the rest of the Eastern Conference.
Over the last two years, the Heat have gone from one of the most appreciated underdogs to being stuck in mediocrity. And without Jimmy Butler, the Heat has the look of a team that doesn't know what it wants to be. Miami is directionless and is running out of time to make a splash move - or even to reshuffle their roster - before the start of next season.
Orlando is still very much the second fiddle to Miami in Florida. However, there's no question the Heat needs to find a way to get back on the right track. But despite their identity issues, it's still great to see Heat fans get a good laugh here and there, when they can.
