Heat fans' worst nightmare could unfortunately still be in the cards

This summer could get very, very dark for Miami Heat fans.

For Miami Heat fans, this offseason is either going to be very, very good or nightmarishly bad.

It's hard to envision how there can be much in between for the team heading into the offseason. Especially after Heat writer Anthony Chiang just admitted that the fans' biggest nightmare could very much still be on the table this summer.

They’re going to go after Giannis...they’re going to go after any other star that’s available…if they don’t get any of those guys, I would not be surprised if they wait until 2027 and keep that flexibility…”

The Heat could ask fans for the unthinkable if they miss out on Giannis

Considering the rollercoaster that Heat fans have been on over the last few years, as much as they may want to push back on this idea, Chiang is 100 percent correct.

There is no question that the Heat is going to push hard for Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason. They've been building (and looking forward) to this moment. But, as Chiang notes, what happens if the Heat isn't successful in their attempts to pry Giannis out of Milwaukee? What then?

Again, as much as it would drive Heat fans crazy, it wouldn't be that outlandish to suggest that they may elect to keep their flexibility intact ahead of a possible big summer of 2027.

Fans probably wouldn't like it, because that would almost certainly mean that the team is going to run it back or face another "gap" year in 2026-27, but it'd be foolish not to think that it could still very much be an option on the table for the Heat this summer.

A worst-case scenario for Heat fans

Fans have generally pushed back on this idea. The idea of "wasting" years to wait on a star that may or may not be available on the trade target is somewhat of an antiquated approach. Even though the Heat have had success with this in the past, this is not a tactic that we're seeing teams take in the Association anymore.

Mostly because of the great risk, considering that free agency isn't really a thing anymore. Players are bypassing free agency by asking for trades a year or two before their contract expires. It's the tactic that Giannis may take this summer if he does end up traded.

He has one left on his current contract with the team, but will almost certainly never hit free agency.

For one reason or another, the Heat still believes it's in their best interest to keep cap space flexibility heading into 2027, if they miss out on Giannis.

Most fans don't agree with that approach, and even though the Heat may not have that intention now (with the desire to strike a trade for a star player this offseason), that doesn't mean it's effectively off the table just yet.

And that could end up driving fans crazy this summer in what many would describe as a nightmarish scenario.
