In the moment, the Jimmy Butler trade return felt a bit underwhelming and had little to no grand significance. As quality players as Andrew Wiggins and Davion Mitchell were, it was difficult to envision how they were going to make a significant difference for the Heat at the time.

But a year and a half later, something has changed. After the addition of Giannis Antetokounmpo, it seems that the Heat is finally in a position to reap the true benefits of making such a trade.

That's because if the Heat is going to defy expectations and emerge as a successful team this season, you'd have to imagine that both Wiggins and Mitchell are going to make strong contributions.

And, in a way, the Heat fans will finally see the real benefits of trading Jimmy. A move that, in the moment, at least to some fans, felt completely unnecessary and forced.

The Jimmy Butler trade is finally pay dividends to the Heat

This doesn't mean that Wiggins and Mitchell weren't good for the Heat last season; they were. However, it was difficult to see their true value on a borderline playoff team that didn't even end up making the field.

On a championship-contending team, or at least one that has such aspirations, the path to seeing the real value in the likes of Wiggins and Mitchell will be that much more visible.

At the very least, it will help fans see the whole picture of why the Heat made the deal they made with the Golden State Warriors before the 2025 NBA Trade Deadline.

Could there be criticisms of the Heat's handling of the entire Jimmy situation? Absolutely. However, they made a deal that was largely centered around Wiggins. It was tough to understand why they did that in the moment, but it does make a lot more sense now.

The Heat envisioned making a bigger move in the future and knew that if that did happen, Wiggins would eventually play a significant role. That's exactly what's about to happen this upcoming season. Taking a flyer on Mitchell as a smaller part of that deal has paid off too.

Slowly but surely, the team (and its fans) will begin to reap the full benefits of that Jimmy trade. Part of it was appeasing Jimmy and trading him to a different situation, but another part of it was a big gamble that the front office made. Betting on the hope that a bigger deal would come in the future. It did.

A year and a half later, all of that is finally paying off.
