The Miami Heat's almost-impossible path to earning the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs is officially set. And as unlikely as it may seem for the Heat to earn that final playoff spot, they'll have a fair swing at it.

At this point, it's not just an opportunity to make the NBA Playoffs, but it could also be viewed as one final chance to save their season. If Miami wants to change the narrative this year, it won't be easy. It all begins with a road game against the Charlotte Hornets on night one of the NBA Play-In Tournament.

If they were able to make it out of the game still alive, they would get the loser of the 7-8 matchup between the Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers. Should Miami win that game, they'd then earn a shot at the top-seeded Detroit Pistons.

The Heat have their backs against the wall

The Heat wouldn't just be big underdogs to win that hypothetical playoff series, but they would have long odds to even make that first-round series competitive.

Still, as crazy as it may sound, the Heat likes it that way. Miami loves being doubted. This franchise feeds off it. And with their recent track record, it's hard to blame them.

After all, the Heat are still the only team in Play-In Tournament history to win a first-round playoff series. In that same year, the Heat also became the only team in Play-In Tournament history to make the NBA Finals.

This is not to say the Heat has the potential to make another NBA Finals run, but the Heat will certainly be slightly more confident heading into the Play-In Tournament because of their past history.

The Heat's final grasp of an era may be on the horizon

It's a much different roster today than the one that went to the NBA Finals back in 2023, but the Heat has notoriously always been a dangerous underdog.

Miami does some of its best work as a franchise when they're counted out. It would be a mistake for the Hornets, 76ers, Magic, or even the Pistons to do that before they even take the floor.

It remains to be seen if the Heat will be able to capture some magic of the past with this team, but either way, clarity will be found for this franchise.

Success or failure heading into the Play-In Tournament, it feels like big changes are coming to the Heat after this season. And if they do bow out in the Play-In Tournament prematurely, it may only expedite the process and simplify their decisions.

Miami may have only one shot to save it all. How will they respond to this final opportunity?
