One natural takeaway from the Miami Heat's somewhat peculiar Haywood Highsmith trade is that it proves just how confident the team is in Pelle Larsson. In fact, after the trade, there's a strong argument to be made that a path has been cleared to help allow the young wing to shine this season.
With the momentum that Larsson has built after last season, in which he truly impressed during his time in the NBA Summer League, and then continues to show signs of promise while playing for Team Sweden in preparations for EuroBasket 2025, there's no reason why he shouldn't have a spot in the rotation to start the season for the Heat.
Whether he'll be able to retain that spot in the rotation and earn a bigger role will be determined by whether he can make an initial impact right away. But, at least on paper, Larsson finds himself in a position where he could seemingly breakout as one of the better storylines for the Heat heading into the 2025-26 NBA season.
The Heat need Pelle Larsson to stand out
But this is not just a great opportunity for Larsson. In many ways, the Heat are going to need unexpected players to step up in a big way this season, if it's going to be a positive campaign for the team. Larsson is on the short list of players who you'd expect to be able to emerge into such a role.
I wouldn't say there are huge expectations sitting on Larsson's shoulders at the moment, but he's proven that he does have the talent and skill set to differentiate himself from a few of the Heat's other young players.
And now that a more defined role for Larsson has emerged, the opportunity to have a breakout sophomore year is truly there for him.
Heading into the start of the season, Larsson is going to be in the mix to carve out minutes as the backup small forward, behind Andrew Wiggins and alongside Jaime Jaquez Jr. There's a hope that Jaquez Jr. will be able to bounce back after a sophomore slump, but if that doesn't happen, Larsson may need to step up in that role.
If the Heat are going to keep pace with the rest of the middle of the pack in the Eastern Conference, which is a fair goal for the team in a "gap" year, they're almost certainly going to need one of Jaquez Jr. or Larsson to step up this season.
There are many Heat fans up in arms with their decision to "salary dump" Highsmith. However, part of that reason could also be attributed to the team's sheer confidence in Larsson. If that is indeed the case, it'd be hard to blame them.
