Heat just had a dream NBA Draft without having to make a selection

Giannis Antetokounmpo is a member of the Heat. That's all that matters.

Giannis Antetokounmpo. That's it. That's all that matters.

The Miami Heat will technically make a selection with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, but it will officially be conveyed to the Milwaukee Bucks once the league year opens next month. And, honestly, there's not a player that the Heat could've taken with this pick that will make a bigger impact - both on and off the floor - than Giannis will this season, and over the next few years.

That's why this NBA Draft, no matter what happens over these next two nights, is going to be remembered as a resounding success for the Heat. They're naturally going to be the big winners because of the Giannis trade.

The 2026 NBA Draft marks the start of the Giannis era for the Heat

And, technically speaking, the Heat could add to that with the No. 41 overall pick, which they still control.

It remains to be seen if it will be used as a bargaining piece to trade a player like Nikola Jovic, but considering the Heat's recent luck in the NBA Draft, you have to trust the front office and the scouting department to find another steal in the second round.

Should they be able to pull off such a move, there's a chance this player contributes to the Heat sooner rather than later. That's the dream. But even if the Heat don't ever make the selection with the intention to keep the pick, again, the NBA Draft will be a success.

Because of Giannis.

The Heat has effectively punted on the NBA Draft for the foreseeable future

For better or worse, that's what this NBA Draft will be about Giannis for the Heat. And, for that matter, so will the foreseeable future for Miami. Having sent over unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033 to Milwaukee, along with a pick swap in 2030, it would be an understatement to suggest that the Heat has, for the most part, just punted on the NBA Draft for the foreseeable future.

But after adding a player like Giannis, that's a gamble most Heat fans are willing to take. Pat Riley (and this Heat's front office) certainly has.

So tonight, at least for the Heat, is not just about the draft. It's about the future. It's about the start of what will be an entirely different era for the franchise.

Without having to make a selection, the Heat are already one of the bigger winners of the 2026 NBA Draft. And that's very much headlined by the acquisition of Giannis.
