If the Miami Heat are overvaluing Nikola Jovic behind closed doors, and if that becomes the reason why they're not able to add Klay Thompson this offseason, that could end up being a far too familiar mistake that could end up derailing the start to the Giannis Antetokounmpo era.
Over the last few years, the Heat's front office has been ridiculed for overvaluing their players. It cost them star pursuits in the past. Thankfully, it didn't hurt them in the pursuit of Giannis, but that all-too-common mistake could already be hurting the team's attempt to build around their new superstar.
According to Brett Siegel of Clutch Hoops, the Heat have shied away from the possibility of building a trade package for Klay because of how much they value Jovic. Essentially, the team, at least for now, isn't interested in trading the young wing.
“Even though the Heat could get creative with a trade offer revolving around 23-year-old forward Nikola Jovic, this doesn't appear to be a scenario Miami wants to see play out. Jovic is a young talent the Heat have coveted since drafting him 27th overall in 2022, and he is one of the team's only youthful options after trading Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis for Giannis.”

Assuming the Dallas Mavericks would much rather trade Klay than buy him out this summer, the Heat's refusal to trade Jovic could end up being a reason why they don't land the elite shooter this offseason, or at all.
If Dallas finds another team willing to trade for Klay, there's no question this decision could end up hurting the team's first-year build around Giannis.
Because if it's not Klay, it's hard to envision how the Heat are going to find another proven supporting scorer to help legitimize the team's current supporting cast around Giannis.
Of course, considering the source, this should all be taken with a grain of salt. I have a hard time believing that the Heat wouldn't trade Jovic if it came to that. But, at the very least, if there's any substance to this report, this is one of those situations that are going to leave many fans questioning.
Could the Heat be holding out for a buyout?
There's a very good chance that the Heat are just waiting (and probably hoping) that Klay is eventually bought out. And, honestly, if the Heat could get Klay without parting ways with an asset, even a depleting one like Jovic, that would be the way to go.
Signing Klay (if he were indeed bought out) is the type of complementary move that would take this offseason from good to great. Of course, that's a lot easier said than done.
The Heat needs one more signature move to help cement this team around Giannis. If it is true that the Heat overvaluing Jovic is a reason why that may not be able to make it happen, it's going to put the fan base in an awfully familiar position.
And that in a very good way.
