Miami Heat insider Ethan Skolnick is predicting that Klay Thompson will eventually, one way or another, land with the Heat. If this were to happen, it'd certainly transform the Heat's championship hopes in a big way.
“I believe he will end up in Miami. I understand he’s still under contract in Dallas. I will just continue to say I believe he will end up in Miami… it could be closer to camp. I just want to prepare people. The Heat are in no hurry to fill these roster spots”
Since the acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo, many have, and rightfully so, pointed out that the Heat still lacks shooting. And, sure, while they have some threats (Tim Hardaway Jr., Andrew Wiggins, Simone Fontecchio, Pelle Larsson) on the perimeter, they do lack that elite shooter who would give some legitimacy around Giannis and Bam Adebayo.
Should the Heat land Thompson, all that would end. Because even though Thompson is no longer in the prime of his career, he would give the Heat some much-needed legitimacy on the wing. He'd also quell many of the concerns surrounding their lack of shooting around their dynamic duo.
The Heat may have turned up their aggressiveness for Klay Thompson
The most interesting part of this all is that it appears the Heat seem to be increasing their aggressiveness in pursuit of Thompson. Again, that doesn't guarantee anything for the Heat, but it does seem, with the rest of the free-agency well dried up, that Miami, at least to a certain extent, is willing to explore the trade market, if need be, for Thompson.
On paper, he'd make all the sense in the world for this team. Thompson is looking for another fresh opportunity to compete at this point in his career. It's part of the reason why he decided to join Luka Doncic in Dallas a few years ago.
That didn't exactly work out with the Mavs trading him less than a year into the experiment, but maybe it will in Miami. Thompson next to Giannis and Bam could be lethal.
It would give Miami the established shooter they need on the perimeter, while helping stretch defenses even with the mere presence of Thompson on the floor.
With the shooters Miami currently has on the roster, it's hard to pinpoint any one of them having that impact every night. You have to respect Hardaway Jr. and Wiggins as shooting threats, but not to the extent that teams would have to game plan around Thompson.
And that's the type of addition that would completely transform the Heat's championship hopes heading into this first season under their new build. If Miami is able to pull it off, it's the type of move that could shift the Eastern Conference even more.
