The New York Knicks beat the Miami Heat to the punch by signing veteran guard John Konchar just before the start of training camp.
According to a recent report from Heat insider Barry Jackson, the Heat had been in communication with Konchar's camp about the possibility of accepting a training camp invite with the intention of allowing him and Myron Gardner to compete for one of the Heat's roster spots.
Such a move would've allowed the Heat to keep a 15th spot open (in an attempt to keep roster flexibility), while also adding a veteran guard to help bolster the backcourt.
"According to a source, the Heat has spoken to Konchar’s camp about potentially competing with Myron Gardner for a roster spot; the Heat is expected to circle back this week with a decision about whether it will formally offer that opportunity."
However, in the end, it seems that Konchar chose to agree to more of a sure thing with the Knicks than to wait on the Heat.
The Heat still may need to add insurance behind Davion Mitchell
With Konchar effectively off the board, there's reason to believe that the Heat still may need to add some real insurance behind projected starting point guard Davion Mitchell.
At this point, especially heading into the first year of the Giannis Antetokounmpo era, it would be wise for Miami to try to find another veteran guard to add before the start of training camp. That's why the lure of Konchar was strong.
With the veteran guard pool even more shallow than it was just 24 hours ago, it's hard to envision how the Heat will proceed now. Will they turn to another veteran guard? If so, there's been one consistent player who the team has been linked to over the last few months.

If Miami is married to the idea of adding another veteran guard, even if it is just to compete for a roster spot in training camp, it's difficult to find many better options. Vicent knows the system, has chemistry with Bam Adebayo, and does have something to play for after a less-than-stellar last couple of seasons in Los Angeles.
It's difficult to predict what the Heat will ultimately opt for, but it's certainly an option that has to be on their radar at this point. Especially after the Knicks may have swiped Konchar right from under their noses.
