For weeks now, Tyler Herro has been the biggest Miami Heat player discussed in trade packages for then Milwaukee Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo, but what if another big-time star was suddenly made available? Would Herro for that player make for a better trade option if the Antetokounmpo chase failed?
Really, only three superstars have been linked to the Heat as possible trade targets. Antetokounmpo, of course, Kawhi Leonard, and Kevin Durant. Durant seems like the farthest long shot, while Leonard may actually be a more feasible option; he might not be the best option for the Heat, leaving Antetokounmpo as their best target.Â
That said, the situation with the Dallas Mavericks is rustling up a lot of conversation, given Masai Ujiri's recent takeover, Jason Kidd's subsequent firing, and the previous removal of Anthony Davis at the trade deadline. With the intent to build around Cooper Flagg, the changes could keep coming, and that's where Kyrie Irving enters the picture.
The Heat could target Kyrie Irving via trade if the Mavs start taking offers
Irving's tenure in Dallas hasn't gone the way he likely planned. Then again, what has gone to Irving's plan since he left the Cleveland Cavaliers after the 2016-17 season? There's no denying his talent or gifting as a basketball player, but his career after the Cavaliers has been marred by controversy, and with the Mavericks, it's been injuries that have stalled him.
It's almost inevitable that the Mavericks will move on from Irving this summer. The direction that Ujiri has indicated in his short time at the helm of the Mavericks is that it's Flagg's team now, and the build around him already left Davis out the door, and Irving is likely next.
There's no telling what type of player Irving will be once he's fully recovered and ready to play again, but if the Heat are weighing their options between which superstar to pursue this summer, Irving could spring to the top of the list.
Irving has been one of the most electrifying guards in the league since he was drafted to the Cavaliers, and might still be. He's an elite scorer, but even a better facilitator, which would open things up for Bam Adebayo. If Herro was the price to land Irving, it's a cost the Heat should be willing to pay.Â
Remember, before getting traded to the Mavericks from the Brooklyn Nets, the Heat attempted a run at him themselves. A few years later, with a healthy Irving once again, it might be the best time to take another run. The Mavericks have to open the window first, though.Â
