The Miami Heat may not have come out and said it yet, but it does appear as if they're prioritizing their young core moving forward. The Heat allowing Duncan Robinson to leave in free agency is the latest evidence of that. Considering their other moves to not strongly pursue Kevin Durant and to keep the No. 20 overall pick when that fell through, it's the only real explanation.
In the end, the Heat worked a sign and trade in which Robinson will sign a four-year deal with the Detroit Pistons. In exchange, Miami will receive Simone Fontecchio. But truly, this was a move that sent a strong message about what we could expect from the rest of the Heat's offseason.
The Heat are embracing their youth
It's a sign that Miami is probably not going to pursue the big changes that many expected. Not even the ones that Pat Riley preached about during his end-of-the-season press conference.
Instead, it does suggest that the Heat is going to lean more into their young core. It may not have been their first choice, but it's clear that it's what is going to take place for the franchise moving forward.
Maybe something changes if another superstar player becomes available - and attainable - for the Heat. But heading into the 2025-26 NBA season, it's clear that there won't be many expectations for the Heat.
This also helps describe what took place on NBA Draft night, in which the Heat, somewhat surprisingly, stayed put with the No. 20 overall pick. Interestingly enough, Miami took a high-ceiling player over one that could potentially help right off the bat.
Whether the fan base agrees, it's clear that the Heat have made a conscious decision with their moves so far this offseason. Again, this is probably not the front office's first choice, but, at this point, there's really no point in pushing back.
What's next for the Heat? It's difficult to predict. However, it's pretty clear what we shouldn't expect from Miami - and that's a win-now move from the franchise. For better or worse, it does appear as if the Heat have picked a direction, even if it is just for one season.
