In a somewhat shocking fashion, one that no one could've seemingly predicted just a couple of months ago, the Miami Heat's high-stakes game of chicken with the Dallas Mavericks (over Klay Thompson) could end up being a defining era of the Giannis Antetokounmpo era.

Because right now, it does feel like an acquisition of Thompson could be the one way that the Heat could successfully expedite the path to championship contention. He's the one ceiling-altering piece that the Heat could still add this offseason, which would be considered a remote possibility.

Even then, it's not all that likely.

Heat are playing a dangerous game in the first year of the Giannis build

And that's where the game of chicken enters the equation. But it's not just any game of who blinks first between the Heat and Mavs; it's an extremely dangerous one with plenty at stake. After making the big splash for Giannis, the Heat have yet to make another significant move to help bolster the supporting cast around their new superstar.

For better or worse, it's becoming quite clear that the reasoning behind that is their focus on Thompson.

If it ends up working out, the Heat are going to look like geniuses. Thompson is the one player who could legitimize this first-year supporting cast around Giannis. If he were to be acquired, it'd completely alter the way the Heat are projected heading into the start of the season.

But if it doesn't, it could end up being a decision that ends up derailing the first year of the Giannis era in Miami. I wouldn't say that the Heat have put all their chips in the Thompson basket, but it is starting to feel that way.

Did the Heat overplay their hand for Klay Thompson?

We're coming up on a little more than a month before the start of training camp, and the Heat still have three open roster spots. The overwhelming opinion is that a big part of that is because Miami is waiting on a resolution with Thompson, one that may or may not come before the Heat need to ramp up for the new season.

The Heat won't ever admit that they missed out on free agents because of their preference for Thompson, but there are at least a couple of signings that they could end up regretting not moving on if the Thompson move never happens.

That's the big risk the Heat are taking in this first year with Giannis.

Time will ultimately tell, but the Heat is playing a dangerous game of chicken here with the Mavs. Because if Dallas decides they're either going to trade Thompson or keep him on the roster, there's nothing the Heat can do.

And with the way things are shaping up now, they may not have a realistic plan B either.
