Klay Thompson could legitimize Heat in Giannis' year-one build

It could be complicated, and it may take some time, but if there's a chance that the Miami Heat could add a veteran shooter like Klay Thompson, they should do what they can to make it happen.

In fact, there's a real argument to be made that Thompson is a piece that would go a long way in legitimizing the Heat's first-year build around Giannis Antetokounmpo. But, again, that could be a lot easier said than done because Thompson is still a member of the Dallas Mavericks.

He would have to be waived, bought out, or traded before this even becomes a possibility. But, according to recent reporting, there is a plausible path to it all coming together for the Heat.

The Heat should pounce if Klay Thompson wiggles free from Dallas

In theory, it would make sense for the Mavs and Thompson to part ways. Dallas is in the middle of a rebuilding process, and Thompson, at 36 years old, could be looking for one last shot at another NBA Championship.

Next to Giannis and Bam Adebayo, Thompson could get a golden opportunity for one last chance.

In many ways, Thompson could be considered somewhat of a missing piece for the Heat. I wouldn't suggest that Thompson, especially at this point in his career, would be a player that could put the Heat over the top in the Eastern Conference, but as accomplished a shooter as he has been, there's no question he'd be an asset for Miami.

And with the focal point away from Thompson, life would get slightly easier for him than it currently is in Dallas. As a third or fourth option in Miami, Thompson could emerge as a huge addition for Miami in their first-year build around Giannis.

Klay Thompson could fill a huge void for the Heat

Assuming Thompson still has a bit of gas left in the tank, Thompson is the exact addition that the Heat has been missing this offseason. He's the type of veteran signing that would get fans even more excited about what's to come this season.

Perhaps most importantly, it's the type of move that would help make the Giannis move to Miami make much more sense.

Coming off a "career low" season in which he still managed to shoot 38 percent from 3-point range, Thompson could be worth the risk based on that alone. If that's a "bad" year for Thompson, the Heat could be getting a shooting threat (from a very accomplished player) that they just haven't had since the days of Ray Allen.

To a certain extent, the addition of Thompson could be viewed as this era's Ray Allen move. And we all know how that signing ended up working out for the Heat.

Time will ultimately tell how viable it will be for the Heat to acquire Thompson. But if it's feasible, the Heat could be about to pull off one of the most underrated moves of the offseason. And one that would make them a much more viable threat in the Eastern Conference.
