Simone Fontecchio may be about to take on a much bigger role in the Miami Heat's first year build around Giannis Antetokounmpo than most are willing to admit.
That's because, in theory, Fontecchio might be the team's best spacing fit next to Giannis and Bam Adebayo. For a team that needs shooting and size, Fontecchio may be the best option on the roster currently.
And unless there's a bigger move coming, Fontecchio could be considered a perfect fit next to Giannis and Bam in the frontcourt as a floor spacer.
Simone Fontecchio has the potential to be a great floor spacer
During his first season in Miami, Fontecchio shot 38 percent from 3-point range. More specifically, Fontecchio shot 48 percent on wide-open 3's this past season. That was a career year mark for the stretch big man.
Considering that he's going to be playing next to Giannis now, you'd imagine those opportunities are going to get more frequent. And if he can even be close to that 48 percent clip this upcoming season, it's going to be increasingly more difficult for Erik Spoelstra to keep Fontecchio out of the rotation next to Giannis and Bam.
Add in th fact that Fontecchio has great size (at 6-foot-7), and has the potential to be a good rebounder for his position, and there's a case to be made that he might be the best wing floor spacer that the Heat has on its roster next to Giannis and Bam.
Sure, Fontecchio has a history of struggling on the defensive end, but that's part of the advantage of having defensive aces like Giannis, Bam, and Davion Mitchell around him.
Erik Spoelstra will figure things out, and Fontecchio could play a part in that
If Spo needs spacing, Fontecchio can add that. He can also find ways to hide himself on the defensive end of the floor, within the team's scheme. That's part of the advantage of having such a strong defensive core of players.
So while many continue to suggest that the Heat doesn't have enough shooting on the roster, I'd say that may not be completely true. While it may not be the best to completely rely on Fontecchio playing an everyday role in this rotation, we also can't put this idea on the back burner either.
Because if he can replicate some of the impressive shooting numbers that he had last year, especially in the beginning of the season, the Heat's best floor spacer on the roster may be one that no one seems to be talking about.
If it's shooting that the Heat needs, Fontecchio can clearly provide that. And he will if there aren't any other big additions coming for the Heat.
