If they're going to win the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes, the Miami Heat are going to have to overcome a potential last-minute pitch from the Boston Celtics.

Whatever that looks like, the Heat are seemingly going to have to hold off the Celtics as we enter what many perceive to be the final stretch of the Giannis saga. That much became clear after Sam Amick reported that Giannis is "very intrigued" by a trade to the Celtics.

“While league sources have long maintained that Giannis is interested in joining Miami, there’s indications he’s very intrigued w/ the prospect of joining a Celtics team that’s deeper & more dynamic than Miami’s & could remain more competitive after a blockbuster deal.”

The Celtics could spoil the Heat's dream offseason

There are certainly many more questions that need to be asked here, but the bottom line is that, despite some conflicting reporting of late, the Celtics could still very much be a real threat to the Heat's dream of landing Giannis.

And this wouldn't be the first time the Celtics play the role of spoiler for the Heat, as these two franchises have been rivals for quite some time now.

While the Heat may have dominated this rivalry during the Big 3 era, the Celtics have gotten the best of Miami over the last few years. Both on and off the floor.

The Celtics and Heat have played four playoff series since 2020. They've split each of those series, but the Celtics do have the one championship to show for it. That gives them the edge.

There's an argument to be made that the mastery of Brad Stevens in the front office and Joe Mazzulla on the bench means the Celtics have eclipsed the Heat as the standard of excellence in the Eastern Conference.

Miami will certainly push back on that, but the results over the last five years have spoken for themselves.

The Heat can't lose Giannis to the Celtics

But if the Heat were to land Giannis, perhaps it would be time to rethink that entire premise. At the very least, Miami would have the opportunity to make it a conversation again. Especially if Giannis brings them the championship relevance they believe he could.

Perhaps most importantly, if the Heat were to lose Giannis to the Celtics (or any other team, for that matter), it would absolutely push this team to some big-picture questions that the front office may not be ready to answer.

It just can't happen. The front office needs to ensure that it won't.

I suppose it's pretty poetic that the Heat's potential last hurdle before a blockbuster trade for Giannis is the Celtics, a team that has seemingly been Miami's thorn in their side this decade. And if Miami can't hold off Boston, then maybe they just don't deserve Giannis anyway.
