Now that DeMar DeRozan has hit the open market (after being waived by the Sacramento Kings), the Miami Heat are considered one of the finalists to sign the former All-Star wing.
There are multiple reports out that pretty much suggest that DeRozan to the Heat is a very real possibility. Jake Fischer reported that the Toronto Raptors and Heat are two teams he believes DeRozan will end up deciding between, while Sacramento sports radio host Matt George believes the Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers are two teams he's hearing.
If nothing else, the Heat have been considered the one constant in the early reporting surrounding what may be next for DeRozan.
The Heat's and DeRozan's path could finally be lining up
None of that should be particularly surprising. The Heat have been linked to DeRozan before, but things just never seemed to line up for both sides. Either DeRozan was looking for more money than the Heat had at their disposal, or Miami just didn't have the desperation needed to pursue an aggressive move for the slashing wing.
That could all be different this time around.
As the Heat continue to try to build around Giannis Antetokounmpo on the fly, DeRozan could be considered one of the most intriguing possibilities for the Heat at the moment. Sure, there's all the LeBron James noise that still needs to be sorted out, but if that doesn't come to fruition (the Cleveland Cavaliers should be considered the favorites at the moment), there are not going to be many better options than the likes of DeRozan.
Even though there could be some major spacing concerns on paper, DeRozan could be an electric addition for the Heat in the right role. DeRozan may not be considered the "right" starter next to Andrew Wiggins, Giannis, and Bam Adebayo for the Heat, but as a sixth man, he could truly make his impact felt on this Heat team.
DeMar DeRozan could be dangerously good for the Heat (in the right role)
There's a reason why there is interest on both sides. The fit could work out quite well for both sides, especially if DeRozan is ready to take on a different type of role at this point in his career.
But, again, there's a waiting period that Miami would like to see through. The question is, will DeRozan be patient enough for the Heat to become a viable option for him this summer? And would he be willing to play for the veteran's minimum, which the Heat would likely offer?
Until those questions are answered, we don't quite know how likely it is for DeRozan to seriously consider the Heat.
One thing is for sure, though, and it's the fact that, in theory, this possible connection between DeRozan and the Heat has never made more sense than it does now.
