Speaking about star players that the Miami Heat could target this offseason, team beat writer Ira Winderman candidly brought up Lauri Markkanen as a potential trade target this summer. It left fans wondering just how much credence there could be to this "off-hand" comment.
Sure, the Heat have been reportedly interested in Markkanen in the past. However, those whispers had disappeared quite a while ago. Perhaps that could be an option back on the table as the Heat prepare for an all-or-nothing offseason pursuit of a star player.
In theory, Markkanen would present an intriguing potential addition in the frontcourt alongside Bam Adebayo, but he certainly wouldn't leap over top targets like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Donovan Mitchell.
Nevertheless, it just goes to show just how large of a net the Heat plan on casting this offseason in hopes of landing a star player.
Will Lauri Markkanen finally hit the trade block?
The big question, of course, is not necessarily if the Heat will revisit past trade talks for Markkanen. Because, if it came to it, I believe the Heat would, at the very least, test the waters. The real question is whether the Utah Jazz would finally entertain the idea of trading Markkanen.
They've avoided it in the past; have things changed now?
Despite some exciting young pieces on their roster, it's pretty clear that the Jazz are not close to contention in the Western Conference. And it wasn't just the fact that they finished with the fourth-worst record in the league.
Just looking across the landscape in the West, it's hard to imagine how the Jazz is going to compete with the likes of the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs anytime soon.
Because of that, and the fact that they were gifted the No. 2 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, if there was a time to trade Markkanen, it might have arrived.
Even if the Jazz hits with this top 2 selection, Markkanen will be 29 years old by the time next season begins, and probably on the backend of his prime years by the time this prospect fully reaches his.
The timelines don't match up, and it may be in their best interest to trade him for younger players or future draft capital. And that's where the Heat could step in as a sensible landing spot for the all-star forward.
Markkanen fits the timeline of Bam's, and he gives the Heat a dynamic wing that they currently don't have on the roster.
The Heat will cast a large net to attract a star this summer
At this point, if the Jazz is open to the idea of it, Markkanen should be added to the list of star players that the Heat could end up targeting this summer. As desperate as the Heat seems to be, there may not be any option that they don't consider.
And even though Markkanen has struggled with availability over the last couple of seasons, he's a player who could give the Heat a boost that they desperately needed all throughout this past season.
If the Heat's goal this summer is to trade for a star player, Markkanen has to be on their radar. And, intentionally or not, Winderman may have just successfully done that for the fan base.
