Pat Riley had a lot to say during his end-of-the-season press conference Monday afternoon, but nothing was more emphatic than his message that he isn't going anywhere, and he isn't changing.
It's a message that is far from surprising, but also one that will upset many jaded Miami Heat fans. Those in hopes that perhaps this underwhelming gap season would lead to fundamental changes for the franchise were wrong.
At least for now, there's not going to be any adjustments to the status quo or to those in charge. Even though Riley doesn't have the final say on decisions, he is still one of the most influential figures in the front office. And that's not changing.
Pat Riley is on his own time
Even at the ripe age of 81 years old, Riley doesn't seem to be slowing down. Sure, the criticisms around him have certainly grown, but he continues to operate with the same passion as he did decades ago. And it's a big part of why he's not ready to turn in his suit.
For the Heat, that could be both good and bad news. Depending on which side of the aisle you may land.
There is a portion of the fan base that wants to see Riley keep aiming for the stars (pun intended). Those who want to chase the likes of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kawhi Leonard, and Ja Morant. It's the way the Heat has operated historically, and, in their defense, has found much success in that philosophy.
Is it time for change within the Heat's power structure?
However, on the other hand, there are some fans who are ready for huge organizational changes. Not necessarily the faces, but the way the Heat operates as a franchise as a whole.
The way they build their roster, the way it views the NBA Draft, and the way they value assets.
Of course, it's hard to envision that happening as long as Riley is still the face of the franchise. Riley has a way of doing things, and it'd be shocking if he suddenly changed his philosophy.
Considering the success he's had across decades, it'd be difficult to blame him. But that's why this portion of the fan base will not like or appreciate one of Riley's biggest messages from this end-of-the-season press conference.
The Heat is going to be what the Heat has been. That includes Riley. And, unfortunately, that's going to anger (or disappoint) some jaded Heat fans.
