With the Miami Heat on the hunt for a superstar, Nikola Jovic was one player who was not guaranteed to still be on this roster heading into 2026-27. Nevertheless, after the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade, Jovic has been given another opportunity to prove his worth for Miami.
And, recently, he got brutally honest about the entire process.
“I thought I was probably not going to be here. But I’m really happy. Obviously, not only because I’m going to share the court and play with [Antetokounmpo], but I’m also happy that I’m going to be able to learn from one of the greatest power forwards ever. The way he lives, the way he treats basketball, and stuff like that. He’s a beast. There’s not much you can say more than that.”
Nikola Jovic was given a lifeline he didn't expect
The first sentence says all you need to know about how Jovic thought this offseason was going to go for him. In short, he thought he was a goner. He thought he was going to be traded, especially as the Heat prepared to turn the page for the franchise.
The next sentence suggests he just got a lifeline he didn't expect. He's happy to still be in Miami. Another life to prove that he can be a building block for the team, this time with Giannis. With the way last season ended for Jovic, it felt as if there was a good chance he had played his final game in Miami.
He did even less of a favor for himself with the way he handled the exit interviews. It was an absolute disaster of a season. But it's over. It's done with. There's nothing he can do to fix it anymore. What's in the past is in the past.
The question is, what will he do with this newfound lifeline? Will he be able to take advantage of this opportunity?
The hope is that he can take advantage of it, something that he just failed to do last season. When everyone believed that he was in line for a breakout year, it just didn't happen for Jovic. And maybe there are multiple reasons why it didn't, but he'll have a new opportunity to right that wrong this year.
Even after the bad taste that last season left in their mouth, the Heat will have no other option but to give Jovic another fair shot to figure it out. They may need him to work with a thin supporting cast around Giannis.
Will Jovic respond? Can he live up to the potential? Can he still develop into the player that most thought he'd break out as last season? Time will tell, but even Jovic will admit it himself, he does feel like he's playing on borrowed time now.
