It's been well-reported that the Miami Heat may need another team or two to help facilitate a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade with the Milwaukee Bucks. According to recent reporting, the Detroit Pistons are one potential candidate.
And if they would step in to help the Heat get a deal for Giannis done, it would certainly qualify as the lifeline of a century.
The likes of Giannis never become available. So when they oddly do, it only makes sense to take advantage. And that's what the Heat have been trying to do over the last few weeks. Up to now, they haven't been able to get on equal footing with the Bucks.
The Heat need a third team to help get a deal for Giannis done
But there's reason to believe that inclusion of a third or fourth team, like the Pistons, could help change that.
The recent rumblings suggest that the Bucks may not want to take Tyler Herro back in a larger deal for Giannis, and that they would much rather a third team take him on in exchange for a draft pick or another asset. That's where Detroit could make some sense.
NBA insider Jake Fischer reported that the Pistons had been interested in Herro at this past year's NBA Trade Deadline, and still have an interest in the all-star guard now. How interested they may be remains to be seen, but if they're willing to enter the fray to help the Heat and Bucks, it would certainly be a huge development.
If, and that's a big "if," the Pistons are willing to enter the fray to give up a draft pick for Herro, that could go a long way in helping the Heat bring a more appealing offer to the Bucks. By no means does that mean a deal is close, but it could help bridge at least part of the gap between the Heat and Bucks in trade talks.
The Heat need to find a way to close on a deal for Giannis
At this point, the Heat would greatly be appreciative if that were the case.
With how much this front office (and the fan base) has invested in Giannis, it would be absolutely gutting if they weren't able to find a path to get a deal done. Miami needs to figure out how to make it happen, and if the Pistons suddenly were willing to help, the Heat's front office has to explore what that would look like and ensure it happens.
As we inch closer and closer to decision time for the Bucks, the Heat are certainly on the clock. There's also a significant level of pressure on their shoulders. The front office knows that.
If the Heat are able to come through and pull off a deal for Giannis, they're going to need some help. All of a sudden, the Pistons may have suddenly thrown their name into the hat as a potential facilitator. If so, the Heat should be ecstatic.
