Of all people, Bill Simmons, a notorious Miami Heat hater, has seemingly given the team an endorsement for Giannis Antetokounmpo. In his words, Simmons said he believes the Heat are a team that Giannis wants to go to and added that the league is more fun if that were to happen.
In a sense, especially with the passion that Simmons was speaking to, it was almost as if he wanted to see it happen, alluding to how interesting the Eastern Conference would be next season if it did. If nothing else, this should inject the Heat fan base with even more excitement about the possibility of the team landing Giannis this summer.
If there are any Heat fans still on the fence about this possibility, it's time for them to officially start buying in.
The Giannis saga is nearing its end, and the Heat are right there
It's become quite clear that the Heat are all-in on this possibility. They're pursuing Giannis strongly, hoping to find some sort of resolution, either way, in the next few weeks. And, at least for now, if Giannis does end up being traded, it does seem as if the Heat are going to be one of the few teams with a strong possibility of getting something done.
That doesn't necessarily mean that they will, but they'll certainly be one of the finalists.
At this point, you'd have to think that some of the hesitance from Heat fans has to stem from not wanting to get their hopes up, only for the rug to be pulled from under them, as it's happened to them quite frequently over the last few years.
That's completely understandable, but that's also not what fandom is about. You can't have the luxury of experiencing the highs of fandom without the lows. It's a natural part of sports. And the past shouldn't rob Heat fans of the ability to get excited about what may or may not happen.
Heat fans have every right to get excited about Giannis, whether it happens or not
With Giannis, Heat fans need to allow themselves to be excited of the possibility.
Whether it happens or not, Heat fans need to be able to go through these emotions. And, of all people, if Simmons is excited about the possibility, so should Heat fans.
Simmons is a Boston Celtics fan and, by proxy, a Heat hater. But he's also a basketball fan and historian. If, as an objective voice, he says Heat fans should be excited about the possibility of Giannis, that says a lot.
And fans shouldn't be afraid of what may go wrong if they get their hopes up.
It's time for Heat fans to get excited about the scenario in which Miami acquires Giannis this offseason. It's not every day that they get that opportunity. The Giannis's of the NBA rarely become available. When they do, you pursue it no matter the cost, especially in the situation that the Heat currently finds itself in.
It's OK for Heat fans to start thinking about the possibilities with Giannis. Even if there's still a 50 percent chance, or greater, that they end up hurt again.
