Tyler Herro told reporters that he'll easily fit in with the Miami Heat's new offense and that it lines up with his game. He's going to be himself, play fast, and add to the momentum that the Heat has already built to start this season. And that's exactly what Heat fans needed to hear as his return quickly approaches.
There's natural concern about Herro's fit on the Heat's new offense. They've moved away from screen action and pick-and-rolls for the most part; those are two elements that have been a big part of Herro's offense creation in the past.
However, as Herro says, there's no need to worry about him. He can fit right in, despite the philosophical changes that the Heat has undergone.
"I think I’ll be myself. Play how I play. I know how to play fast. I’ve played fast my entire life until I came to MIA - I can play in any offense. That’s just what I can do."Tyler Herro
Theoretically speaking, that's what you'd assume. Herro has all the characteristics of a player who should fit great in the Heat's new offense. He can play fast, has always pushed the ball on the break, and is a great 3-point shooter.
Tyler Herro will evolve when he returns
Sure, Herro has had a tendency to hold on to the ball a little too much, dribble a little too much, and rely on the screen action a little too much in the past. But that doesn't mean he won't be able to evolve equally with this new offense.
Because of his underrated playmaking ability, I'm sure Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra will add some sets for Herro to create off the dribble or even off a ball-screen, but that won't be the norm. And in those situations, I'm sure it will be an attempt to complement the offense, not change it.
But that's where fans will have to trust Spo.
There's a chance that Herro could absolutely feast in this new offense, but, because of his previous tendancies, it could take some time for it to click. And fans need to be patient.
In his words, Herro is roughly a week or two away from a return to the lineup. Herro returned to practice over the weekend in a limited fashion, indicating that the ramp-up is officially beginning.
It's only a matter of time until Herro is back on the floor for the Heat. In the meantime, fans should be excited about the possibilities.
