The quickest way to reach the heart of Miami Heat fans is by praising Dwyane Wade. Anthony Edwards has done it in the past, and he just did it again when explaining what helps fuel him at this point in the season.
After fueling the Minnesota Timberwolves to a comeback win over the Denver Nuggets in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series, Edwards gave some major props to the Heat's best player in franchise history when describing where he gets his inspiration from.
"I just be watching DWade clips. He would beat (expletive) at the rim so I just be trying to beat (expletive) at the rim. If Rudy ain't down there, I'm trying to beat that (expletive). I don't care who it is. I don't give a damn. I'm trying to beat that (expletive)."
Throughout the early portion of his career, Edwards has drawn many comparisons to Wade. He's done a great job of living up to it, too, so it's no surprise that he continues to lean into the connection between the two.
Heat fans have grown an affinity for Anthony Edwards
It's something that Heat fans have paid close attention to as well. So much so that it's safe to say that he's emerged as the ultimate pipe dream trade target for the fan base. At this point, if there's one player that Heat fans could magically drop on their roster out of anyone in the NBA, I'd pretty safely suggest that Edwards would be at the top of that list.
It's not just the similarities to and praise of Wade; Edwards is that good a player too.
But when Edwards makes comments like this one, it just makes Heat fans love him more. Watching him take over games in the playoffs, something he's done time and time again through the first five appearances of his career, it's only natural for the Wade comparisons to continue to pop up.
Anthony Edwards is a dream scenario for the Heat
Considering Heat fans are desperate for having that type of player again, it's easy to see why Edwards would be a dream fit in Miami.
But at least for now, that's all that idea is. A dream.
There is no indication that Edwards is going to hit free agency or the trade block anytime soon. For now, all Heat fans can do is enjoy him from afar. But there's no question that comments like these from Edwards are only going to stoke the flames for Heat fans.
And at this point, it's hard to blame them.
