Miami Heat Grab Bag: Training Camp Begins Edition

Welcome to a (somewhat) weekly grab bag of thoughts and observations from the past few days in the world of Miami Heat basketball and the NBA.

Ex-Heat Players Are Still Ex-Heat Players

Heat fans will always keep a table for two in their heart for our two favorite Michaels–Miller and Beasley. Both were available to make a return to Miami as they tried to fill out their roster, but if there was ever a sign that the Heat were not interested, signing John Lucas III is the ultimate “don’t call us, we’ll call you.”

So Beasley signed in China, Miller in Denver, and the Heat still have one spot on its roster up for grabs. James Ennis is hanging on as much as he can, but we know how reliable his handles are.

My money is on one of the guards getting the spot. I’ll even get specific! You heard it here first, folks, Corey Hawkins will upset Ennis for the final roster spot.1

(Don’t worry. Greg Whittington will get a spot on the Sioux Falls Skyforce).

McJesus is Back!

Erik Spoelstra called Josh McRoberts a big point guard and raved some more about having his power forward back. With moves like this, how could he not?

Remember last season when McBob had to sit out the first few games with an injured foot? Remember how we had to start Shawne Williams at POWER FORWARD? Remember how we started 3-0 and everyone was like “just wait until McRoberts comes back!”?

Remember how the Heat lost five of the next seven and everyone was like “I can’t wait until Josh McRoberts comes back.”? Everything seemed to hinge on the arrival of McJesus and, when he did come back, he got hurt again.2

Well, none of that is happening this season. Instead, we’re excited for Gerald Green’s forever scowl and whatever remains of Amar’e Stoudemire. Spoelstra’s here to warn you, don’t sleep on McRoberts!

Safe Travels: A Letter to Michael Beasley

Hey B-Eazy,

Just wanted to say safe travels back to China. It’s bullsh*t that no one signed you in the NBA, but they don’t know what they’re missing.

Yeah, you’ve got a smooth stroke and you were better on defense than they give you credit for. They don’t deserve you in the NBA, man. F’em! China is where it’s at anyway.

Remember that time you won All-Star game MVP? They won’t even let you play in the All-Star game here!

Who needs ’em. Enjoy your horse meat and snake juice, man. Be well and, of course, Be eassssssy.

Good Riddance: A Letter to the 3-Point Line

3-Point line,

Look, don’t take it personally, but this isn’t going to work. I tried. I really did. Everyone thought we would be good together. Everyone thought you would complete me. I gave it a shot. 102 shots, to be exact, but I wasn’t feelin’ it.

It’s not you, it’s me. I’m just not, y’know… *sigh*… It’s just not gonna work, ‘kay?

I’ve got a few good years left and I want to spend them the best I know how. Slicing and dicing. Getting in the paint. Hanging with Gabrielle. Picking on Rio. These things make me feel like me. It was a good try, but I just don’t need you. I’ve had a great run–one of the best–and I’m going to do me. Enough listening to everyone else, it just hurts you and me. You do you. I’ll do me. Let’s just not pretend.

See you on the other side,

Dwyane

1. This is a complete guess but, hey, if I’m right…

2. Not before he did this, though.
