The Miami Heat will learn their 2026 NBA Draft Lottery fate Sunday, May 10, at 3:00 p.m. Currently sitting in the 13th slot, the Heat will test their chances of moving up. The order for the 2026 NBA Draft will officially be set by the lottery.
What are the Miami Heat's odds?
Heading into the NBA Draft Lottery, the Heat will have a 4.8 percent chance to move into the top 4, and a 1.0 percent chance to earn the No. 1 overall pick. Depending on how the lottery shakes out, Miami could end up selecting 1-4, 13, or 14.
Alonzo Mourning will be representing the Heat at the lottery in hopes of bringing some much-needed good luck to a franchise in desperate need of a lifeline.
"Hopefully my representation will help us bring another franchise pillar for the organization. The draft is an opportunity for us to get that next player that we can grow and develop. That next piece."
But if recent history is any indication, the Heat are going to need more than just some good luck on lottery day.
When was the last time a team outside the top 10 jumped up?
Last season, the Dallas Mavericks won the lottery after entering with the 11th-best odds. Two years ago, the Atlanta Hawks did the same, jumping up from the No. 10 position. If the Heat were to do something similar from the 13th position, it would be quite the story.
However, the fact that, in each of the last two seasons, there has been a team leapfrog from outside the top 10 into the top 3 isn't likely to bode well for superstitious Heat fans. The odds of that happening three straight years can't all be that likely.
That means it would take a huge outlier for the Heat to make a big move up the lottery this year. That doesn't mean it can't or won't happen, but the odds seem even longer when you consider it that way.
When was the last time the Heat had a top 5 pick?
Over the course of their team history, the Heat has only drafted in the top 5 five times, but only once in the last 20 years. They've never had the top pick in any NBA Draft.
During their 11-year history in the NBA Draft Lottery, the Heat has never improved its draft position and has lost positioning six times. That means in more than 50 percent of their draft lottery appearances, the Heat has come out in a worse position than they entered it.
The hope is that this time around, things will be different. If it does end up playing out that way, it could go a long way in giving this team a much-needed boost heading into the offseason.
