Giannis and 2 other Heat players who can't afford to disappoint

Expectations are higher than ever.

Whether a player has “the most to prove” is incredibly subjective. On one hand, the list of Miami Heat players who have the most to prove could realistically include the outright best player who just wants to be “respected” again. On the other hand, there are players who just want to get playing time.

Regardless, there are several Heat players on this team that do indeed have a little more on the line this upcoming season. Here's a list of three players that fit this description almost perfectly.

Nikola Jovic

Nikoka Jovic is probably the current Heat player who has had the biggest fall from grace. After starting 38 games in the 2023-24 season, he’s likely closer to being traded than to becoming a core piece of this roster. And that’s unfortunate considering the flashes he’s shown at his best.

It doesn’t help that he’s starting his new extension coming off of by far his worst season as a pro, either. But he’s only 23, and there’s still absolutely hope here.

However, he has a long road ahead to prove he is trustworthy as a regular rotation long term player. Sure, he’ll probably be in the initial rotation, but Bobby Portis and Nick Richards could very easily take the bulk of Jovic’s bench opportunities if he doesn't produce.

This is realistically the season where Jovic has to prove himself. If it’s not this season, he’s very likely on his way out.

Giannis Antetokounmpo

Now, why would Giannis Antetokounmpo be on a list like this? He’s already won multiple league awards (MVP, DPOY) and is a champion. But he just ended his tenure with the Milwaukee Bucks, where playoff success started to dwindle in the last few years.

If Giannis and the Heat were to fall short in the playoffs (let’s say a first-round exit), the narratives about failure is going to set it, fair or not. Of course, it’s pretty easy to understand that Giannis has managed to play incredibly well through bad coaching and bad rosters, which are more to blame for the Bucks’ recent playoff failures.

He probably doesn’t have the most to prove of anyone on the roster, but he’s up there just off of his own clear motivation.

Dru Smith

Dru Smith will be 29 years old at the end of this season, and at a certain point, the Smith experiment will either be a success or a failure. I personally think he can prove to be a success, considering he’s just missing a significant level of offensive production.

If he can just be a slightly below-average offensive player, he can be a very valuable player for this Heat team. Especially since he’s already very well proven on defense. But that's a lot easier said than done.

Like every other player on this list, Smith will certainly have to prove it this season.
