After years of chasing the superstar, the Miami Heat finally landed one in their blockbuster trade of Giannis Antetokounmpo at the start of the summer. But on just the second day of Heat training camp, the thought of it all being ripped away was born in the minds of fans.
Ironically enough, it was an offhand polarizing comment from Giannis that prompted the panic. When speaking about his experience with the Heat so far, he introduced the idea that his time with the Heat could be just one or two years.
Understandably, it was the story of the Heat's second day of practice.
“I’ve never been apart of something like this. I want to leave my mark. I want to know when this chapter is over, if I’m only here for a year, two or whatever it’s going to be I want to leave my mark”
Heat fans better hope Giannis wasn't being intentional with his comments
It's probably safe to assume that Giannis wasn't being pointed with his comments here, but, especially considering his recent history, nothing is a given. Maybe this was Giannis respecting the fact that he hasn't signed a new contract; at least, that has to be the hope. Maybe there is nothing more to it.
But we won't know for sure until he decides to sign an extension, or doesn't.
If there's one thing that is clear, it's the fact that Heat fans better hope these Giannis comments aren't a prediction and are just a coincidence. Because the last thing that the Heat needs is for Giannis to already be thinking about the possibility of leaving before he's even played an official minute for the franchise.
After years of chasing a superstar capable of changing the culture, it can't end this way with Giannis. This entire experiment can't be a one-or-two-year experiment. And not even just because of what it cost to get Giannis.
Sure, in theory, the Heat would be in a very dark place after giving up all their assets for a one or two-year rental. However, the hurt would go much deeper than that.
It's the psychological loss that would hurt the organization more. It's the fact that the Heat organization had been building toward Giannis for years. Losing him after just one or two years would be a colossal failure on their part.
While it would represent a huge stain on the organization, it would also leave a very bad taste for Heat fans. Especially now that fan morale is at an all-time high, losing Giannis sooner than expected would be absolutely gutting.
The fact that Giannis hasn't even played a game for the Heat, and this is already a discussion, can't be promising.
Again, maybe we're all reading too much into an offhand comment from Giannis. But there's no question that Heat fans had better hope that their greatest fear isn't about to play out right before their eyes.
