It didn't come without trying, but the Miami Heat failed multiple times in their attempts to land another superstar player during the Jimmy Butler era. Interestingly enough, they may be inching closer to such a move now that he's not around anymore.
If the Heat can cement a deal for Giannis Antetokounmpo, which seems to be gaining more and more traction, the front office will deliver on a move for Bam Adebayo that they just couldn't do for Jimmy.
Whether it was an attempt at Donovan Mitchell or Damian Lillard, the Heat could not find that final piece of a possible championship puzzle during the Jimmy build. All of a sudden, Giannis is emerging as a very realistic possibility for Miami.
Heat are still locked in on Giannis, but it'd just be the start of a roster overhaul
If, and that's a big "if," the Heat are able to pull off such a move, it would be very appreciated by Bam. It's a shame that the Heat couldn't pull it off during the Jimmy era, but there's no question that this would be a huge development for this franchise.
But, by no means would this addition equate a "final piece of a championship build" type of move. Even with Giannis and Bam, the Heat would still have much work to do on the rest of the roster.
But this is the type of move that could completely change the outlook for the franchise. The entire offseason would change for the Heat if they were able to pull off a move for Giannis. The team's overall outlook would alter as well.
Instead of being an afterthought in the Eastern Conference heading into next season, the Heat would have to be considered as a potential threat in the conference.
Sure, much of that would depend on how the front office would be able to fill out the rest of the roster, but if the Heat were to acquire Giannis, they'd immediately emerge as a problem.
Can the Heat do something they haven't been able to do in years?
But all of that hope and possibility revolves around one question: Can they find a path to closing a deal for a star player? Something that they haven't been able to do in a very long time.
Despite all the momentum that seems to be building for the Heat in their pursuit of Giannis, it's far from a foregone conclusion. And Heat fans know that, which is why they're not allowing themselves to get too high on this possibility.
Considering the Heat's recent history, it's hard to blame them.
All that said, it does seem as if the Heat may be closing in on something big, delivering on one "promise" for Bam that they just couldn't do when Jimmy was on this roster.
