The national media can try to sell the smokescreens all they want, but it's hard to envision a world where the Milwaukee Bucks trade Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Portland Trail Blazers or Orlando Magic over the Miami Heat.
This could age very terribly, but until a team like the Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Thunder, or San Antonio Spurs enters the Giannis race, Heat fans shouldn't be that worried.
In theory, the Blazers and Magic could make intriguing offers for the Heat. However, ultimately, it's hard to imagine that Giannis would be committed to signing a long-term extension with either of those teams.
Why the Heat shouldn't be threatened by the Blazers or Magic
And, without that guarantee, it's difficult to say that the Blazers or Magic would be willing to offer everything that the Bucks would be seeking. In other words, it's tough to envision a scenario in which the Blazers or Magic would be as aggressive or all-in as the Heat are in their pursuit of Giannis.
That, more than anything, is the biggest reason why the Heat shouldn't view the Blazers and Magic as endgame threats for Giannis. At least not yet.
Is there a scenario where either one of these teams could throw the entire kitchen sink at Milwaukee for Giannis, sure? But I just can't see it for now.
So even as these smokescreen teams get pushed by the national media, Heat fans should continue to hold the line with diamond hands.
There will be a point where things get dicey for the Heat, I'm sure. It wouldn't be a genuine star pursuit without that struggle, but neither the Blazers nor the Magic is that.
Those two teams scream more of a 2K video game threat for Giannis than an actual one.
A timeline for a Giannis trade
For the Heat's sanity, the growing belief is that a Giannis trade will happen within the next month. For the past few weeks, the thought has been that the Bucks would like a Giannis resolution before the 2026 NBA Draft.
That is officially less than a month away. So technically speaking, the Bucks are on the clock. If they're in fact going to move forward with trading Giannis on that timeline, we're approaching deal time for the Heat (or any other team that envisions making a move for the superstar forward).
And, at least for now, the Heat should continue to feel confident about their chances at landing Giannis. Nothing that has been reported over the last few days has changed that, no matter how much the public perception may be shifting.
