If the Miami Heat are going to put the final touches on a trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo, there's reason to believe that it needs to be done fast. More specifically, by the 2026 NBA Draft. That's five weeks away.

With the way things are lining up, if the Heat are going to get Giannis, that almost certainly has to be decided by then.

And that's for the betterment of both the Heat and the Milwaukee Bucks. If Milwaukee is getting an additional lottery pick in this year's draft, they'd want to know that before they make the selections. That will give the team an added layer to their approach at the draft.

Similarly, Miami would get a head start in building around its new dynamic duo. It would also help give both Andrew Wiggins and Norman Powell the clarity they need before making big decisions of their own.

The semantics of a potential Giannis to the Heat trade

Even if the Heat and Bucks agree in principle to a trade, it can't be completed until after the NBA Draft. Because, per the CBA, the Heat can't trade this year's first-round pick. That means, the Heat would have to "pick" a player for the Bucks as a formality.

But, again, it's in the best interest of both sides for that to be decided before the draft.

The Bucks have been on record stating that if they're going to trade Giannis, they'd want to get it done before the NBA Draft. That makes a ton of sense, especially considering how much of a distraction that this entire saga has been.

Whether it's a trade to the Heat or not, the Bucks seem to want to reach a resolution on the Giannis front sooner rather than later. Trade or a comittment to sign an extension.

The Bucks are listening to offers

Because of that, you can pretty much assume that the Bucks are already listening to offers. With roughly a month before the 2026 NBA Draft, Milwaukee likely already has a pretty good idea of what the offers might be. Especially considering they did this whole song and dance at the trade deadline.

I suppose there could be some surprise dark horse suitors to enter the trade market late, but, for the most part, the Bucks know what Giannis' suitors will be. Even more so if Giannis has a list of preferred landing spots.

If the NBA Draft is the ideal timeline to trade Giannis in Milwaukee's eyes, the process likely needs to be already underway. And it all starts with having those honest conversations with Giannis, if they haven't already happened.

Then, it's sifting through trade offers and deciding one way or another if they actually want to finally pull the trigger.

If the Heat end up being on the right end of those trade talks, it's pretty safe to say that it's going to happen by the NBA Draft. That's just over a month away. If a trade doesn't happen by then, you can all but assume the Heat's chances of pulling off a move for Giannis are going to shrink drastically.
