It was an ending that the 2025-26 Miami Heat probably deserved, but not one anyone in the fan base wanted to see play out. After a loss in the opening round of the NBA Play-In Tournament against the Charlotte Hornets, the Heat's season officially comes to an end.
Miami ran out of gas in overtime, losing to the Hornets 127-126. Despite the valiant effort without Bam Adebayo in the lineup, after suffering an injury for the entire second half, the injury finally caught up with them.
Nevertheless, this will be a loss that will leave a lasting mark on the franchise.
Especially considering the opponent, it was a pretty devastating way to end the season. But, especially with the way this team played down the stretch, it wasn't all that shocking a result when encapsulating the entire Heat's season.
The Heat's disastrous gap season
In many ways, this game against the Hornets was a microcosm of the season that was for the Heat. At times, they looked great in this game, but they looked completely lost at others. Ultimately, this year will be remembered as a pretty disastrous gap season for Miami.
Even though this team wasn't expected to win an NBA Championship this year, there was hope that the Heat could make strides in their development, angle themselves for a potential in-season big move, and possibly emerge as a dangerous team in the Eastern Conference.
Unfortunately, the Heat didn't have much luck on either of those fronts.
Instead, Miami somehow has found itself with even more questions than before heading into the NBA offseason. It's certainly not the end of the world for the Heat heading into the summer, but they'll certainly have their work cut out for them.
The Heat have a big offseason on the horizon
After the loss to the Hornets, the Heat will now turn its head toward the offseason. Interestingly enough, it may not be as depressing as this Heat season was. In fact, there's a chance that the Heat has a franchise-altering few months ahead of them.
It starts with a shot in the NBA Draft Lottery. It's a very, very unlikely chance, but, nevertheless, the Heat could theoretically move up in the draft to really shake things up.
But even if the Heat isn't as lucky as, for example, the Dallas Mavericks were last year, the front office will carry the high hopes of another Giannis Antetokounmpo pursuit. In fact, according to a recent report, the Heat will be highly aggressive in the trade market - even beyond Giannis.
That should leave fans to believe that change is coming. It's on the horizon.
What that change will actually bring remains to be seen. But it should give Heat fans some incentive for such a bad year for the team overall. And on Tuesday night, it was punctuated by, of all teams, the Hornets.
